Hello Everyone,
I hope you are all safe and well in the aftermath of the hurricane. Here on the farm we lost power on Monday afternoon and then during the night a cedar tree came down and took the power line, cable and telephone lines with it. On Friday the telephone service was restored, so fortunately we have internet service again. I expect in will be at least another week before our electric service is restored. In the meantime we have been getting by with a generator which allows us to run the heat and the water pump and periodically turn on the refrigerator and a chest freezer. The main challenge has of course been obtaining the gasoline to run the generator. Things are difficult and inconvenient but do not compare with the devastation that many are experiencing in our area. In terms of the farm and the crops, we have had very little damage. The plants were battered by the wind and many are lying on their sides but they will straighten up and continue to grow. So if you receive a bunch of broccoli with curved stalks, you will know why! We are about to experience several very cold nights which could potentially do more damage than the storm. We are covering what we can and harvesting as much as we can ahead of the cold snap. And then there is the approaching Nor’easter! What can one say… we will get through it and forge ahead, what else can we do? Take care, be safe, and be well.
The share for this week will be lettuce (probably romaine or green leaf), arugula, potatoes, carrots, radishes, purple bok choi, choice of an herb, and either broccoli or cabbage.
Enjoy!
Farmer John
