Letter from John Krueger

Hello Folks, 

We had a flurry of weather events over the weekend including a brief flurry of snow. On Friday night we had our first frost of the season followed by our first hard freeze on Saturday and again on Sunday night. We had 26 degrees at 6 AM Sunday morning and 24 degrees this morning – brrrrr! 

Last week in preparation we were scurrying about trying to harvest anything that would be damaged and covering a few crops we thought maybe we could save. Unfortunately the temps dipped even lower than forecast and we wasted our time covering crops and should probably have harvested a few things we could not get to. We lost quite a few radishes that we had planned to harvest on Sunday, since Sunday night was predicted to be when extreme cold arrived. By Sunday morning they were already ruined. It will be a few days before we can gauge the extent of the damage. Many of the hardy crops are able to repair the damage they sustain and continue growing. For certain we are done with the peppers, eggplant and zucchini, but we still have lots of great food for you in storage and in the fields. We will have peppers one last time this week and some small eggplant as an extra.

The share for this week will be: Romaine lettuce, red skin potatoes, choice of arugula or tatsoi, delicata squash, choice of shallots or cippolini onions. red cabbage, parsnips, white sweet potatoes, choice of kale or kohlrabi, peppers, ornamental gourds and choice of an herb (dill, cilantro or parsley).
