Letter from John Krueger (Week 11)

Hi Folks,

So it continues to rain regularly here on the farm. We received almost 2 ½ inches over the past week, a bit more than the inch per week that is ideal. I’m not complaining though- it’s been good for the thousands of transplants we’ve been setting out as well as helpful for germinating the direct seeded crops. It’s come mostly in the evening and overnight which means it hasn’t interfered with our work. In case you hadn’t noticed we’re in the throes of another heat wave, which might be worth complaining about if it would do any good. Besides I’m still working on my string of consecutive weeks without complaining about the weather! Although the Guinness folks haven’t returned my call yet.

Our cucumber production has dropped off as have the melons. We are waiting for the next planting to begin to ripen with the melons and a late planting of cukes will hopefully begin to produce soon as well. We will have melons for some groups this week and for others the week after. We should have sweet corn for everyone this round and hopefully larger quantities in the coming weeks. There may be an earworm or two on the tips (that’s how you know it’s organic-or so I’ve been told lol). We have some lettuce this week though they are somewhat small heads- we have to cut them or lose them to bolting. Eggplant production has slumped a little too, as the flowers which open during extreme heat drop off without forming fruit. Tomatoes and beans continue to be abundant. Peppers are beginning to ripen more prolifically so we will begin to send colored peppers to some groups this week and others the week after.

The share for this week will be: Carrots, gold potatoes, kale, onions, lettuce, sweet corn, peppers, beans, tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, maybe melons and choice of an herb (thyme, parsley or savory). For “extras” there will be hot peppers and tomatillos. Premium members will also receive Napa cabbage and eggplant.

Enjoy!
