Letter from John Krueger (Week 19)

Hi Folks, 

It was a wet week here on the farm with just over 3 inches of rain falling between Wednesday’s torrential squalls and Sunday’s dismal drizzle. We also had our second frost of the fall season on Friday night. As previously mentioned most of what is left in the fields is fairly hardy and we try to cover a few crops to keep them going a bit longer. But as the days get shorter and the nights get cooler growth becomes much slower. Beans, peppers and zucchini are now definitely done for this year. As the cold becomes more intense in the coming weeks we will switch to covering hardy crops which, while not being outright killed by low temperatures, can still be damaged.

We have some nice rainbow carrots for you this week as well as radishes to complete the root crop duo. We lost some of our broccoli to black rot due to wet conditions and are waiting for the next planting to begin to head up. Cabbage will be the stand–in as we put broccoli on pause for now. We still have lots of cauliflower and Brussels sprouts to look forward to as we move into the final weeks of the season. Greens continue to be lush and abundant as they will for the duration of the deliveries.

The share for this week will be: Lettuce, peppers, delicata squash, French fingerling potatoes, rainbow carrots, radishes, choice of arugula or broccoli raab, spinach, green cabbage, and choice of an herb (cilantro, parsley or thyme). Premium shares will also include celery and choice of radicchio or endive (frissee).
