Letter from John Krueger (Week 24)

Hello Everyone,

So we have reached the end of another season. I know that for many of you the last share pickup is a sad event; knowing that it will six months before you can begin receiving fresh produce from the farm. For me and my workers it is a bit of a relief. My workers have been suffering with working outdoors through some very cold and damp days over the last few weeks. I know that they are looking forward to going home to their families and to a warmer climate. For me it is relief from the worry about the crops and the weather and wondering if we will be able to finish out the season in good form. From my perspective I believe it was a respectable season in terms of what we were able to deliver to the members in spite of all the challenges the weather has given us. I have gotten some good feedback from a few of you. I hope that most of you feel the same and have been satisfied with what we were able to provide. I am extremely grateful to my members for their trust and support. It is your faith in the farm that allows me to do what I love and believe in. I have to confess that there have been a few moments of frustration recently when I’ve thought of throwing in the towel and putting the farm up for sale. But I know that I am fortunate to be able to live in such beautiful place and that I have much to be thankful for. I have a tremendous team of workers without whom I could never have built what I (we) have built. The wages they earn here enables them to make a better life for their families and I feel a responsibility to them as well as to the CSA members. And we all have a responsibility to future generations and need to think about what kind of world they will inherit. Agriculture has a big role to play in combating climate change and I am glad to be part of that. I thank you all again for your support. I wish you Happy Holidays and a safe and healthy winter.

The share for this week will be: Lettuce, carrots, baby bok choy, garlic, rutabaga, white potatoes green or savoy cabbage, Brussel’s sprouts, buttercup or Seminole squash and sweet potatoes. Premium members will also receive beets, cauliflower and spinach.

Enjoy!
