Last Letter from John Krueger - Last Day to Order Circle Brook Stock Up Share & River Bend Meat Shares!

Hi Everyone,

So we have arrived at the final week of the season.  In spite of the drought it was one of most productive years so far.   Through every season since 2003 when I began serving a CSA group of 38 members in Montclair we have made steady improvements in the quantity, quality and variety of produce in the shares. In the 10 years after that first CSA season new groups were added each year and membership grew at a steady pace. In 2013 there were 700 members and based on the strength of the business and the generous support of some of these members I was able to fulfil a lifelong dream of farm ownership. My plans were to continue growing my CSA base and begin to diversify into fruit and possibly egg production. My dream was to eventually build a processing kitchen to create value added products from the produce and preserve what is often lost in working with highly perishable products.  In 2014 we had 780 members but then in 2015 membership dropped sharply to 700 and again for this season membership dropped precipitously to 600 members in spite of adding several new groups.  It has been hard for me to understand this decline when I now that we have consistently improved the value that we provide our members. My experience is not unique; there is a great deal of talk in the CSA community about declining memberships and attempting to understand the causes.  There is more competition, not only from new farms but also from “fake” CSA’s and so called co-ops- companies that use the model but are actually just middleman.  There is more organic produce in the supermarkets and there are more organic home delivery services.    None of these actually benefit the local farmers because they are focused on the bottom line and have no real commitment to local food production.  Farmers are forced to compete with prices from industrial scale California farms.
This year, in spite of tremendous productivity has been financially disastrous for Circle Brook Farm.  I attempted to sell more wholesale to utilize the excess of what was planted for the CSA and for markets, but with limited success.  Many potential outlets that made noises about supporting local did not follow through. We have donated thousands of pounds of produce to food pantries and soup kitchens but thousands  more ended on the compost heap  and tons more were left in the field to rot.     This season we were also faced with more expensive truck and tractor repairs than usual and more labor and energy expense due to the drought.   We now are left with tons of potatoes, winter squash, and root vegetables in storage and more greens and brassica crops in the field that we are not able to sell.   And I am left with unpaid rent, taxes and credit card debt.   And I am left wondering if the local food movement was just a fad that has had it’s moment.
I don’t give up easily and I am committed to local, sustainable food production but I need your help.  Please consider purchasing a stock up share.  If there are items that you cannot use they can be donated to food pantries.  Alternatively you can purchase an entire share to be donated either to the folks who work with your CSA group or to Local Share the organization that we work with here at the farm.  We will be continuing to sell at the Montclair market on Saturdays in December- Walnut St. train Station 9 am -1pm  We will need to begin registration for the 2027 season early in January and will offer an additional discount for those who sign up early.  Most of all I need your help in building the membership for next season. Word of mouth has always been the best advertising for the CSA.  Please tell friends, family, coworkers and anyone who will listen about the farm and the CSA program and the importance of supporting local agriculture. If you can find the time please get involved with the core group that organizes and manages your pick up site.  If you know of anyone who might be interested in starting a group in their town or at their workplace please put them in touch with me.
Thank you all for your support this season and especially to the core group members who work so hard so that I can focus on the farming. And thank you for the kind words of appreciation from those who have visited me at the markets or on the farm. I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and a safe and healthy winter.
The share for this week will be: lettuce, onions, potatoes, parsnips, arugula, sweet potatoes, baby bok choy, spinach, baby carrots, radishes, choice of a pie pumpkin or buttercup squash, green cabbage and sunchokes.  Cauliflower for those who have not yet received it this fall.
Enjoy!

Circle Brook Farm -- End of Season “STOCK UP” Share

Circle Brook Farm is offering one additional share to be delivered on November 18th -- our last delivery day for the season.  This will be a “stock up” share and will include various vegetables that store well, so that you will be able to enjoy produce from the farm well into the winter months as well as provide veggies for your Thanksgiving feast.

The total weight of this share will be about 60 lbs. Approximately a third of the share will be winter squash- butternut, acorn, spaghetti, buttercup (kabocha), delicata, and sweet dumpling squash. The share will also include an assortment of root vegetables such as carrots, beets, parsnips, turnips, rutabaga, celery root and radishes. This year it will also be including Jerusalem artichokes aka sunchokes and another tuberous member of the sunflower family-yacon (pronounced jacone). It is sweet and juicy with a light orange color (carotene) and is similar to jicama. It can be grated raw into salads or cooked in stir fries for a water chestnut like crunch. The root crops will comprise about 15 lbs. of the share. There will also be about 15 lbs. of potatoes, onions and garlic in the share. The potatoes will include some fingerlings and an assortment of other varieties of potatoes. Also included will be green and red cabbage, and whatever greens we still have in the field at this time, such as arugula, broccoli raab or other mustard greens, kale, lettuce and spinach. It is probable that there will be broccoli and/or cauliflower and there will certainly be Brussels sprouts.

The cost of this final share is $90, which is an excellent value, equivalent to a wholesale price for much of the produce included.

The potatoes, onions and squash can be stored in a cool dry place such as an attached garage or enclosed porch, where they will not freeze. The root vegetables and cabbage will best be stored in your refrigerator. John knows that this final share will not work for everyone, but he hope that many of you will be able to participate. Doing so will help Circle Brook Farm to make use of the produce that we have in storage, utilize what remains in the fields, and finish the season with enough money in the bank to pay the bills during the winter months.

If you would like to purchase a "Stock Up" Share, please email us at farmandforksociety@gmail.com.

Letter from John Krueger

Hello Folks,

We received about an inch of rain this week from a day of drizzle on Thursday and a couple of hours of heavier rain on Sunday. This should help the crops remaining in the field to size up. We also had a couple of cold nights; what we refer to as a hard freeze as compared to a light frost. We have been continuing to cover the peppers but they sustain a little more damage each time and we have to pick much of the fruit green beforehand. We will have peppers again this week but unfortunately not many of the beautiful red and yellow ripe fruit we have had. The season is winding down and we are relying more and more on what we have in storage and root vegetables. This week it will be parsnips and radishes. For the winter squash we will offer a choice of spaghetti, delicata and a variety called Jester which is a cross of delicata and acorn. The next planting of spinach is still a bit small so we will hold off this week; we should have it in the shares for the final 2 weeks. We are still in rotation with the cauliflower and broccoli with kohlrabi and kale as the respective alternatives.

The share for this week will be: Peppers, radishes, lettuce, kohlrabi or cauliflower, broccoli or kale, arugula, parsnips, potatoes, garlic and choice of spaghetti, delicata or Jester squash.

Enjoy!

Letter from John Krueger

Hello Everyone,

This past weekend’s storms brought us a scant 0.4 of an inch of rain. It was more wind than rain and we continue with very dry conditions. We have another chance of precipitation on Thursday. We will also have a couple of cold nights this week, but probably not severe enough to damage what remains in the fields.

Broccoli continues to head up abundantly but the cauliflower is still someone sporadic. We will add kohlrabi to the rotation this week, so if you have already had Napa cabbage and there is not enough cauliflower you will receive kohlrabi. We still have beautiful peppers for you and we will continue to try and protect them from the frosts. We are sending Japanese sweet potatoes this week; they did not do so well this year and are rather long and thin. WE will also be offering very small ones an extra. These are best boiled and eaten with the skin on (a good source of fiber and minerals) or alternatively they make great dog treats.

We had a lovely farm visit on Sunday; the weather was relatively cooperative. It was great meeting more of the members and having a chance to show off the fields and explain to folks how we do the thing we do.

The share for this week will be: Lettuce, peppers, buttercup squash, choice of salad turnips or red skinned turnips, broccoli or kale, choice of arugula or tatsoi, spinach, Napa cabbage or cauliflower or kohlrabi, Japanese sweet potatoes, sunchokes (aka Jerusalem artichokes), leeks and choice of dill or cilantro

Enjoy!

Letter from John Krueger

Hello Folks,

So we have had 2 light frosts since my last update. We were able to cover and protect a few crops, notably the peppers. We tried to save a late planting of string beans but were only marginally successful. We are still quite dry and are hoping for some rain on Friday. Most of what remains in the fields now are brassica family crops that require a lot of water.

The cauliflower has begun to head up and we will be starting a rotation over the next couple of weeks. Those who do not get cauliflower will get Napa cabbage. We are continuing with the broccoli rotation we started last week; those who do not receive broccoli will get kale. We are doubling up on the root crops as other crops are in decline. This week there will be radishes and beets (some of the beets are huuuuge so a bunch may consist of just one 2 lb. beet)

I received a good response to my inquiry concerning a farm visit with almost all preferring Sunday. So we will host a visit on Sunday, October 23 from 11 am until 4 pm. This will be a potluck picnic with grills available for meats or other items. I will give a farm tour at 11:30 ish and another at around 2:30. At present the forecast looks good although a bit chilly so dress warmly. We will have pumpkins available for carving if there is interest. If you have already RSVP’d, I will try to respond but I am very busy so come any way if I don’t. If you have not sent an RSVP - no need. All are welcome so bring a friend, family and especially prospective new members! Pets are welcome too. Circle Brook Farm 141 Brighton Rd. Andover NJ 07821

The share for this week will be: Red skin potatoes, peppers, lettuce, red onions, butternut squash, radishes, a beet or two, either broccoli or kale, either cauliflower or Napa cabbage, choice of spinach or arugula and choice of an herb (parsley or garlic chives).

Enjoy!

Letter from John Krueger

Hi Folks,

We are expecting the possibility of our first frost early Tuesday morning. It will likely be a light one and will begin to warm up as we go through the week. Most of what is left in the field is hardy enough to survive and we will be covering a few tender crops to try and protect them. This will be the last week for eggplant, except for maybe a few small ones as an extra. We will have some lettuce in the shares again this week although the heads won’t be very large; everything grows rather slowly now with the short days and cool night. For those who did not get broccoli last week you should expect it this time around; otherwise there will be kale. We will be including a few decorative gourds and mini pumpkins in the share this week. The mini pumpkins are edible; the gourds are not!

Earlier I mentioned the possibility of a farm visit in 2 weeks. The way it looks now this may be difficult for me to pull off. I would prefer to have it just one day- Sunday 10/23 provided there is enough interest. Please RSVP to circlebrookfarm@gmail.com if you would like to attend. You can also let me know if you would like to come but can only make it on Saturday 10/22. Once I gauge the interest I will make a decision.

The share for this week will be: Lettuce, Rainbow carrots, peppers, eggplant, choice of arugula or tatsoi, garlic, white potatoes, choice of spinach or chard, sweet dumpling and carnival squash, choice of dill or cilantro and ornamental gourds and mini-pumpkins.

Enjoy!

Letter from John Krueger

Hi Folks,

So after 3 days of overcast and drizzly weather we received about a quarter of an inch of total precipitation. It was good for germinating the seeds I recently planted but not nearly what I would like for the acres of brassica crops I have growing. This family which includes broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, needs a lot of moisture to make large heads.

We did not quite complete the broccoli rotation among the groups last week, but nevertheless we will be starting another round. If you have not had broccoli yet this fall you will this week. Cauliflower is beginning to head but grow slowly with the shorter days and cooler nights. Those who received radishes last week will be getting salad turnips this time around and vice versa. We have decided to take a break from white potatoes this week and go sweet on you. The first variety that is ready is a white one; they are really sweet but a bit drier than the orange types. With the cooler temps and a little bit of rain the kale crop has recovered and we can begin harvesting it again. We are still in a gap in our lettuce production- it should be back in the shares next week. We also have a small amount of edamame soybeans for you this week. For those nor familiar, these are typically boiled in the pod then when sufficiently cooled the beans are slipped from the pod with the teeth.

The share for this week will be: White sweet potatoes, choice of arugula or tatsoi, eggplant, leeks, choice of kale or chard, radish or salad turnips, string beans, peppers, spaghetti squash, choice of cilantro or dill and broccoli (for some).

Enjoy!

Letter from John Krueger

Hi Folks,

So the nights are getting quite chilly now up here in the hills of Northwest NJ. We came quite close to having a frost on Sunday night. Just down the road in a low lying field where another farm has some pumpkins planted I noticed that many of the vines had been blackened by the cold. It’s warming up again so we should have another 2 weeks at least before the next round of cold air descends upon us. We have been getting some rain, with more in the forecast over the next few days. So now I will be worried that it will rain too much! Such is the life of a farmer-always something weather related to fret about.

We are getting close to finishing the winter squash/pumpkin harvest, thanks in part to some great volunteers to came out on Sunday and filled a couple of large bins. Thank you! We will be sending you some acorn squash this week some of which is an heirloom white type. I think they are quite nice; I find them a little less stringy than the green variety. They are a bit larger than the green, so that will be your reward for trying something different. We still have lots of peppers and eggplant but the tomatoes are coming to an end. We will try to get all of you a few more over the next 2 weeks. We are still heavy on green beans, so expect large quantities again this week. These are easy to freeze if you are overwhelmed- just blanch in boiling water for 1 minute, then chill in cold water to stop the cooking process. Toss them in Ziploc bags and into the freezer. Voila! We also have fresh Lima beans as an extra, so if you are a fan watch out for them. We are finishing up the 3 week broccoli rotation this week, so if you have not gotten any yet, you will this week. We are out of lettuce for the moment but we are shipping Napa (aka Chinese) cabbage which makes a nice surrogate. We have beautiful arugula now which we will offer as a choice with spinach in order to stretch both of these crops until the next planting matures. Some groups will receive radishes this week and others the Hakurei salad turnips and this will be reversed for next week.

The share for this week will be: Choice of Arugula or spinach, Napa cabbage, peppers, eggplant, gold potatoes, red onions, choice of fennel or celery, acorn squash, beans, radishes (early week groups) or salad turnips (late week groups) and choice of an herb (parsley, garlic chives or Thai basil). Some groups will receive tomatoes this week others next week. Extras are hot peppers and lima beans.

Enjoy!

Letter from John Krueger

Hi Everyone,

So we received a little bit of rain this past weekend. I heard reports of heavy downpours near the farm but they seem to have missed us and we got perhaps a quarter of an inch. I planted a lot of seeds for fall crops as well as several acres of oat cover crop ahead of the storms. The light rain will at least help these plantings germinate but we are still in a drought situation. Nevertheless we have a great share for you this week. Fall broccoli has begun and a few of you were surprised with a bunch in last week’s share. A few more groups will receive broccoli this week and the rest next week. I am still hoping for the return of zucchini from a late planting in a few weeks; in the meantime we continue to include winter squash in the share. We have an excellent crop of butternut this year, so you will receive some several more times before the end of the season. We also have some beautiful spinach; unfortunately not in large quantities at the moment. I have planted thousands of row feet of spinach so I anticipate more abundance at the end of the season. We don’t have much in the way of herbs at the moment; we are sending some parsley and a couple of tea herbs - anise hyssop and lemon balm as a choice.

We could really use some help bringing in the pumpkins and winter squash crop before the deer destroy it all. They are really abundant out here and quite hungry as the grasses have been drying up. They have a tendency to take a few bites of one fruit and then move on to ruin another. I go out every night before bed with the spotlight and my dog Lexi and chase them out of the fields, but they return within an hour or two. We will host a volunteer work day this Sunday at 1 pm to help with the harvest. Come on out and lend a hand and take a few extra squash or gourds home with you. Please RSVP to circlebrookfarm@gmail.com so I will know how many, if any to expect.

We will also host another fall farm visit on October 22 and 23. Stay tuned for more details.

The share for this week will be: Beans (2 types), garlic, colored peppers, beets, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, eggplant, choice of escarole or frissee, Rose Finn Apple fingerling potatoes, butternut squash and choice of an herb. Some groups will receive broccoli. For extras there are hot peppers and okra.

Enjoy!
